New Town Hall

One of the top attractions is the tower observation deck, which provides a 360-degree view of the old town and the Alps. A modern lift takes visitors to the top, with tickets costing around 6 euros for adults. The famous Glockenspiel performs daily at 11 am and 12 pm, with an additional show at 5 pm from March to October. While the administrative offices are generally private, the tourist information center on the ground floor offers city maps and tour bookings. You can also visit the Ratskeller restaurant in the basement for a traditional meal beneath historic vaulted ceilings. The tower is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sundays until 5 pm.

The square fills up very quickly for the Glockenspiel performance, so arrive at least twenty minutes early to secure a clear view of the clock tower. For the best photos of the entire facade, stand near the Fish Fountain or head across the square to the stairs of St. Peter Church. The tower ascent is popular and may have a short wait during peak hours since capacity is limited. Keep in mind that as a functioning government building, certain areas might be restricted during official events. If you are visiting on a budget, watching the Glockenspiel and exploring the courtyard are completely free activities. Public restrooms are available inside the building for a small fee.

The New Town Hall is located directly at Marienplatz, which is the central transportation hub of Munich. It is exceptionally easy to reach from any part of the city using the S-Bahn or U-Bahn. All S-Bahn lines from S1 to S8 stop at the Marienplatz station, as do the U3 and U6 underground lines. If you are coming from the main train station (Hauptbahnhof), it is just a three-minute ride on any S-Bahn heading toward the city center. For those who prefer to walk, it is a scenic fifteen-minute stroll from the main station along the Kaufingerstrasse shopping street. The pedestrian zone means cars cannot drive directly to the building, so public transport is the best option.
