The English Garden is a massive urban park that stretches from the center of Munich to the city northeastern limits. Spanning over 900 acres it is actually larger than Central Park in New York. The park is famous for its natural landscape style featuring rolling meadows winding streams and mature oak forests. It offers a perfect escape for travelers looking to experience the local lifestyle where people sunbathe picnic and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you want to watch surfers on a river wave or relax in a quiet woodland the park provides a diverse landscape for every type of visitor.

One of the most iconic landmarks is the Chinese Tower which stands at the center of a popular beer garden. Another must see is the Monopteros a Greek style temple offering panoramic views of the Munich skyline. For sports enthusiasts the Eisbach wave at the southern entrance is world famous for year round river surfing. You can also visit the Japanese Tea House for a traditional ceremony or rent a paddle boat on the Kleinhesseloher See lake. Most areas of the park are free to enter and stay open 24 hours a day providing endless opportunities for exploration and relaxation.
The park is very large so wearing comfortable walking shoes is essential. While the southern part near the university is lively and crowded the northern section is much quieter and ideal for long walks. Nude sunbathing is legally permitted in designated areas like the Schonfeldwiese so do not be surprised if you encounter this local tradition. Most beer gardens in the park allow you to bring your own food as long as you buy your drinks there. Remember that many public restrooms require a small coin for entry and nearly all shops around the park will be closed on Sundays.
Reaching the English Garden from central Munich is easy using public transport. You can take the U3 or U6 subway lines and exit at the Universitat or Giselastrasse stations for the southern sections. If you want to go directly to the Chinese Tower bus line 54 or 154 will take you right there. For those staying near the main station tram line 16 stops at Tivolistrasse which is very close to the park entrance. Since the park is centrally located it is also a pleasant twenty minute walk from Marienplatz through the beautiful streets of the Lehel district.
The park is beautiful year round but late spring and summer are the most vibrant times to visit. Arriving in the morning before 10 am allows you to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before the crowds gather. The beer gardens are best enjoyed during lunch or early evening when the sun is setting. In July the park hosts the traditional Kocherlball dance which starts at dawn. If you visit in winter the park transforms into a snowy wonderland and you can even find a charming Christmas market at the base of the Chinese Tower from late November through December.
