The most famous attraction at Marienplatz is the Glockenspiel in the New Town Hall tower. It performs daily at 11 am and 12 pm with an extra show at 5 pm from March to October. You can also visit the Old Town Hall which houses a charming toy museum. Nearby the Fish Fountain serves as a popular landmark for meeting friends. For a small fee you can take a lift to the top of the New Town Hall tower or climb the stairs of the nearby St. Peter Church for panoramic views of the city skyline and the Alps.
Marienplatz is a completely car-free pedestrian zone making it perfect for walking. Many shops and traditional restaurants surround the square but keep in mind that most stores in Germany are closed on Sundays. Public restrooms are available in the city hall and nearby department stores. The square can become very crowded during the Glockenspiel shows so arrive ten minutes early to find a good viewing spot. If you visit in late November or December the square transforms into the city most famous and traditional Christmas market.
Getting to Marienplatz is simple because it is the central transport hub of Munich. The Marienplatz station is located directly beneath the square. You can take any S-Bahn train from lines S1 to S8 as they all stop here. Additionally the U3 and U6 underground lines serve this station. If you are staying near the main train station it is only a two minute ride or a pleasant fifteen minute walk through the Kaufingerstrasse shopping street. Look for the blue U or green S signs to find the entrances.
The best time to visit is during the morning to catch the first Glockenspiel performance at 11 am when the air is fresh and crowds are smaller. For photographers the golden hour before sunset provides stunning light on the stone carvings of the Town Hall. Spring and autumn offer mild weather for exploring while December is the busiest time due to the holiday festivities. If you prefer a quieter experience visit on a weekday morning as Saturdays are often packed with local shoppers and street performers.
