Twala Trust Animal Sanctuary

The sanctuary is located approximately 25 kilometers from Harare along Arcturus Road. It is open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, as well as on all public holidays except for Christmas Day. To protect the peace of the animals, visiting is strictly by prior booking only. Guided tours are the primary way to experience the sanctuary and are typically scheduled for 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM. One of the daily highlights is the lion feeding session, which usually takes place at 4:00 PM. While entry fees are available upon enquiry, they are considered affordable and go directly toward the medical care and feeding of the rescues. The site also features a children's swimming pool, bream fishing at the dam, and a bustling farmyard where children can interact with rescued farm animals.

The most important rule is that you must book your visit in advance via phone or WhatsApp. Because this is a working rescue center and not a commercial park, visitor numbers are carefully limited to avoid stressing the animals. Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes as you will be exploring garden paths and bushveld. You are encouraged to bring your own picnic to enjoy at the scenic spots overlooking the dam, though afternoon tea is often provided by the sanctuary. Remember that many animals, such as duikers and tortoises, roam free in the gardens, so watch your step. If you visit on a Tuesday, be aware that the sanctuary hosts Doggy Tuesday, a massive community vet clinic that is very busy but provides a fascinating look at their local outreach work.

Twala Trust is an easy and scenic 45-minute drive from central Harare. To get there, head east out of the city along Arcturus Road. You will continue for about 25 kilometers into the Goromonzi district. Because the sanctuary is tucked away in a rural area, signage is not always prominent, so it is highly recommended to use the specific GPS coordinates or the detailed directions provided by the staff when you confirm your booking. If you are not driving, you can hire a private taxi or use a ride-hailing app like Vaya. Some visitors choose to take a bus from Mbare Musika toward Marondera and then hire a local taxi from the drop-off point, but a direct private vehicle from Harare is by far the most convenient and reliable method for international travelers.
