Kuimba Shiri Bird Park

The sanctuary is located about 30 kilometers from Harare and is generally open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Entrance fees are approximately 6 USD for adults and 4 USD for children, though these are subject to slight changes and should be verified upon arrival. Because it is situated within the Lake Chivero Recreational Park area, a small National Parks vehicle entry fee of about 1 USD may also apply at the main gate. The facility includes the Admiral’s Cabin restaurant, which serves meals and refreshments overlooking the water. Key activities include guided walks through the aviaries and a famous daily free-flying bird display. The park also features a swimming pool, horse riding, and a children’s play area, making it a well-rounded destination for guests of all ages.

The undisputed highlight of any visit is the spectacular bird show, which typically starts at 4:00 PM. It is a good idea to arrive at least an hour earlier to secure a good spot and tour the aviaries first. Since food service at the on-site restaurant can sometimes be slow during busy weekends, seasoned visitors often recommend placing your lunch order as soon as you arrive. Bring sun protection, a hat, and insect repellent, as the lakeside environment can attract mosquitoes. If you plan to enjoy the water, don't forget your swimming gear. For those who enjoy photography, the late afternoon light over Lake Chivero provides a perfect setting for capturing the birds in flight. Most importantly, carry a bit of cash for extra activities like boat rides or pony rides for the children.

From central Harare, the drive to Kuimba Shiri takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. You should head west along Samora Machel Avenue, which transitions into the Bulawayo Road (A5). Continue for about 26 kilometers until you reach the turn-off marked for Lake Chivero or the turnpike service station. Turn left and follow the tarred road for about 1 kilometer until you reach the Lake Chivero Recreational Park North Bank entrance. After paying the park entry fee, follow the well-marked signs to Kuimba Shiri, which will lead you onto a short gravel section before reaching the sanctuary gates. While most of the road is paved, a car with decent clearance is recommended for the final stretch. Private taxis and ride-hailing services are available from the city, but it is best to arrange a return trip in advance.
