Umfurudzi Game Park

The park is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. For 2025, the daily conservation fees are approximately 15 USD for international day visitors and 10 USD for SADC residents. Local Zimbabweans pay a reduced rate of 6 USD. There is also a vehicle entry fee, typically around 5 to 10 USD for standard cars. Accommodation options range from luxury self-catering lodges and permanent tented camps along the river to basic campsites where you can pitch your own tent. The park features an entertainment area near the main office with a swimming pool and a restaurant serving light meals. While basic amenities are available, Umfurudzi is designed for a self-sufficient safari experience. It is important to note that mobile network reception is very poor at the main office, though a signal can sometimes be found a few kilometers away.

Because Umfurudzi is a true wilderness area, a high-clearance vehicle or 4x4 is strongly recommended, especially during the rainy season when internal roads can become sandy and difficult for sedans. Since mobile signal is unreliable, it is a good idea to download offline maps or carry a physical map of the area. Cash is the preferred method for paying park fees, as electronic payment systems may be affected by the lack of connectivity. If you plan to visit the Portholes for a swim, bring proper swimwear and towels. For those interested in history, ask the rangers for directions to the various San rock art sites hidden among the granite hills. While there is a small restaurant, bringing your own supply of drinking water and snacks is highly recommended for long game drives or hikes through the extensive trail network.

Umfurudzi is located approximately 140 kilometers from Harare, and the drive typically takes between 2 to 3 hours. From the city center, you head north along the A2 (Enterprise Road) passing through Newlands and Chisipite. Continue past the tollgate toward Shamva. Once you pass through Shamva, head toward Madziwa until you reach the turn-off for the park.The route is largely tarred until the final stretch, which transitions into a gravel road leading to the park entrance. For those without private transport, hiring a taxi from Harare is an option, though it is more cost-effective to arrange a private transfer or join a guided tour. Due to the distance and the nature of the roads, it is best to leave Harare early in the morning to ensure you have enough daylight to explore the park before the return journey.
