Tofuku-ji Temple

Tofuku-ji Temple is one of Kyoto’s most impressive Zen temples, especially famous for its dramatic autumn colors. Founded in the 13th century, it belongs to the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism and is known for its grand scale and refined gardens. The temple complex features elegant wooden halls, stone Zen gardens, and scenic bridges that cross a tree-filled valley. During fall, thousands of maple trees turn bright red and gold, creating one of Kyoto’s most photographed landscapes. Outside peak season, Tofuku-ji offers a calm and spacious atmosphere ideal for a relaxed visit.
