Ruins of Ancient Abu

The Ruins of Ancient Abu, better known as the Abu Simbel Temples, are two monumental rock-cut temples carved into a mountainside in southern Egypt during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II in the 13th century BC. The Great Temple, dedicated to Ramses II himself, is famous for its four colossal seated statues at the entrance and its interior aligned to catch the sun’s rays twice a year. Nearby is the smaller Temple of Hathor, dedicated to Queen Nefertari, adorned with beautiful carvings and statues. In the 1960s, the entire complex was relocated to higher ground to protect it from flooding caused by Lake Nasser. Today, the temples stand as a UNESCO World Heritage site and remain one of the most awe-inspiring monuments in Egypt, showcasing ancient Nubian artistry and engineering.

Was Sie erwartet

The Abu Simbel Temples are located on the western bank of Lake Nasser, approximately 230 kilometers southwest of Aswan. They were built by Pharaoh Ramses II of the 19th Dynasty around 1264 BC. The main temples include the Great Temple of Ramses II and the smaller Temple of Queen Nefertari. Both temples were carefully moved in 1968 to save them from rising waters caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam. The site is open to visitors daily and offers a glimpse into ancient Egyptian history, religious practices, and monumental architecture.

Entrance fees apply for both temples, and photography is generally allowed but may have restrictions inside. The area can be extremely hot, so bringing sun protection, water, and comfortable shoes is essential.
