Agilkia Island is the picturesque home of the Temple of Philae, one of Egypt’s most enchanting ancient monuments. Surrounded by the calm waters of the Nile, the island offers a magical setting where temples, courtyards, and colonnades rise above shimmering blue water. The island was carefully prepared in the 1970s to house the Philae temples after being moved from their original location to protect them from flooding. Today, Agilkia Island provides a peaceful, scenic escape full of history and beauty.

Agilkia Island hosts the entire Philae temple complex, including the Temple of Isis, the Trajan Kiosk, and smaller shrines. The island is landscaped with walking paths, gardens, and viewing points, making it easy and pleasant to explore. Facilities include rest areas, shade, and a visitor entrance with a ticket office on the mainland before the boat ride. The site is well maintained and suitable for all ages.
Bring comfortable shoes for walking through the temple courtyards and uneven stone paths. Sun protection is essential, as much of the site is open. Boats to the island operate regularly, but prices may vary, so agree on the fare beforehand. Guided tours are available at the entrance and can enrich your visit with stories about the goddess Isis and the temple’s rescue project.
To reach Agilkia Island, head to the boat dock near the Aswan High Dam. Taxis from central Aswan can take you directly there. From the dock, small motorboats ferry visitors to the island in about 10 minutes. The ride is scenic, with views of rocky islands and the calm waters of the Nile.
The best time to visit is early morning, when the island is quiet and temperatures are cooler. Late afternoon is also beautiful, with golden light reflecting on the stone columns. In winter and spring, the weather is ideal for exploring, while summer can be very hot in the open courtyards.
