Guided Tours
The library was inaugurated in the early 2000s to revive the spirit of the historic Library of Alexandria. It includes a main reading area, six specialized libraries including a children’s library and a library for visually impaired visitors, and research centers. The complex also hosts the History of Science Museum, the Manuscripts Museum, and the Antiquities Museum. Admission to the library and permanent exhibitions is free, though guided tours may require a small fee. It’s a hub of knowledge, culture, and art, making it a must-visit for those interested in both modern and ancient heritage.
Wear comfortable shoes for exploring the large complex. Guided tours are available in multiple languages and provide valuable insight into the architecture and exhibits. Photography is generally allowed, though some museum areas restrict flash. The library is a working research center, so maintaining a respectful quiet atmosphere is important. There are cafés and rest areas, and free Wi-Fi is available in much of the building. Allocate at least two to three hours to enjoy both the library and the exhibitions fully.
The library is located in the Shatby / Azarita district of Alexandria, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Taxis are the easiest way to reach it from anywhere in the city. The building is highly visible due to its dramatic circular slanted roof and waterfront location, making it easy to spot once you are in the area. Walking nearby is also convenient if you are exploring the downtown district.
The main reading halls are open from around 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Sunday through Thursday, with shorter hours on Saturday. Museum areas open slightly earlier and close around 5:00 PM. Visiting in the morning offers a quieter experience, especially for exploring the galleries and the rooftop terrace, while late afternoons allow for a scenic view of the Mediterranean and a relaxed atmosphere.
