Cavafy Museum

The Cavafy Museum is located at 4 Cavafy Street in Alexandria’s Raml/Attarin district. It was the poet’s residence for over three decades and has been restored to reflect the time he spent there. The museum is managed in collaboration with cultural foundations and reopened recently after extensive restoration. Visitors can view manuscripts, letters, portraits, and personal belongings, offering insight into Cavafy’s creative process. Admission is free, and the museum serves as both a cultural landmark and a place of reflection for those interested in literature and Alexandria’s history.

The museum is quite compact and may not be wheelchair accessible. Photography is generally allowed, but visitors should be mindful of the quiet, reflective atmosphere. There are no regular guided tours, so exploration is mostly self-paced. Some furniture and décor are reconstructions based on historical photos rather than original pieces. Visiting with patience and respect allows you to fully appreciate the poet’s life, his manuscripts, and the intimate setting that inspired much of his work.

The museum is centrally located in the Raml/Attarin area, near the Alexandria Opera House and main streets. The easiest way to reach it is by taxi; simply ask for “Cavafy Street” or “Cavafy House.” From the city center, taxi fares are affordable and the ride is short. Public transport such as buses or local shared taxis can also get you nearby, but a short walk may be required. Its central location makes it easy to combine with other attractions in Alexandria.
