Hisar Mosque

Hisar Mosque rises in the heart of İzmir’s old town as an elegant example of Ottoman architecture, located in the historic Kemeraltı / Hisarönü district. Its main dome is supported by eight massive stone pillars, giving the prayer hall an expansive, airy feeling. The façade and inner spaces are adorned with rich stucco work, floral and grape motifs, and delicate calligraphy that reflect centuries of devotion and craftsmanship. The mosque’s courtyard features a fine ablution fountain and is a quiet calm spot surrounded by the bustle of the bazaar. Its name comes from the “hisar” (fortress) that once stood near the harbour‑mouth, symbolising the strong link between this mosque, the city’s past and its present urban fabric.

Was Sie erwartet

Situated in the Konak district of İzmir, Hisar Mosque was built in the late 16th century (around 1597‑98) under patronage of Molla Yakup Bey and later experienced several major restorations after earthquakes and wear. The building features a large central dome, three large side domes and further smaller domes at the rear. The last congregational portico facing the courtyard is covered by seven domes supported by marble columns. Over time the minaret, fountain and additional features were added or rebuilt. It remains one of the largest historic mosques in the city centre and is freely open to visitors outside prayer times.

Warum diese Tour buchen

When visiting Hisar Mosque, please remember it is an active place of worship. Dress modestly—cover shoulders and knees, and women may consider a headscarf out of respect. Remove your shoes before entering prayer spaces if required. The interior floor may have carpets and some parts are uneven, so wear comfortable shoes and watch your step. Photography is generally allowed, but avoid taking pictures of worshippers during prayer. Also, because the mosque is located amidst a busy bazaar, be aware of local traffic and stay on pedestrian paths. Visiting during non‑prayer times will provide a quieter experience.

Die richtige Tour auswählen

From central İzmir—such as Konak Square, the seafront promenade or Alsancak—head toward the Kemeraltı Bazaar / Hisarönü district in Konak. The mosque is just a short walk from the tram or metro stop at Konak. If you are at the waterfront, walking inland along the bazaar lanes will lead you to the mosque. Taxis or rideshares are also convenient, especially if you’re carrying luggage or visiting as part of a broader itinerary. Once you reach Hisarönü area, you’ll spot the mosque’s dome and minaret rising above the streets and can follow the signage to its entrance courtyard.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon. These times offer gentler light inside the prayer hall and fewer crowds in the bazaar around. Spring (April‑May) and autumn (September‑October) provide the most pleasant walking weather; in summer midday the stone streets may be hot, and in winter evenings get chilly early. Plan about 30‑45 minutes for the mosque itself; if you wish to explore the surrounding bazaar, historic lanes and nearby cafés, allow up to an hour or more. Arriving before a call to prayer will avoid interruptions.
