Sobesos Ancient City

Sobesos Ancient City is located just south of Şahinefendi village, roughly 25 km from the town of Ürgüp in Nevşehir Province. It was discovered in 2002 and subsequent excavations revealed finely‑crafted mosaics, a Roman bath, public meeting hall (bouleterion) and cemetery elements. Visitors can walk through the site largely free of admission, as it is still less developed as a tourist attraction compared with Cappadocia’s mainstream sites. What you’ll see are exposed floors, mosaics with geometric and symbolic motifs, and the remains of a small Roman/Byzantine town layout rather than the more typical rock‑carved churches of the area.

Avisitors should be aware that Sobesos is relatively remote and still under ongoing excavation and conservation. Facilities are minimal—there is no large visitor centre, café or luxury infrastructure on site—so bring water, sun‑hat or jacket (depending on season), and wear sensible footwear. Because the site is less visited, you’ll enjoy tranquillity, but also fewer signs and guides: a small local guard may be present. The mosaics and ruins are impressive but parts are fragile, so avoid climbing on stones or stepping off the pathways. In summer expect heat, in winter shorter daylight and perhaps more challenging access. As always in an archaeological site, show respect for the heritage and follow any posted restrictions.

From your base in Cappadocia (for example from Göreme or Ürgüp), the drive to Sobesos takes about 30‑40 minutes by car. Head towards Şahinefendi village in the south of Ürgüp district and follow local signs or mapping apps to Sobesos Ancient City. Public transport options are limited: you may use a minibus to Şahinefendi then walk or take a taxi the last stretch. If driving, park near the village and walk the remaining path. Many guided tours from the region also include Sobesos as part of a deeper historical‑heritage itinerary. A rental car gives you flexibility to arrive early or linger longer.
