Cappadocia’s cave dwellings are one of the region’s most iconic features, carved into soft volcanic rock by ancient civilizations. These homes, chapels and storage rooms reveal centuries of everyday life hidden within the valleys and hillsides. Walking through the cave settlements offers a close look at traditional architecture, early Christian history and unique designs shaped entirely by nature and local craftsmanship.

Cave dwellings can be found across Cappadocia, with major sites in Göreme, Uçhisar, Çavuşin and Zelve. Many areas are part of the Göreme National Park, requiring a small entrance fee. Visitors can explore abandoned homes, rock-cut churches and preserved communal spaces. Some caves today are used as hotels, cafés and cultural venues.
Wear stable walking shoes, as paths in valleys and villages can be uneven or dusty. Some cave interiors have low ceilings or narrow entrances, so watch your head and step. Bring water and sunscreen during warm months, as many areas offer little shade. Photography is welcomed, but flash may be restricted in delicate historical sections.
Most cave dwellings are accessible from Cappadocia’s main towns—Göreme, Ürgüp and Uçhisar—by walking, taxi or guided tours. Göreme Open-Air Museum and Çavuşin Village are among the easiest sites to reach. Renting a car provides flexibility for exploring remote cave areas like Zelve Valley or Soğanlı.
Early morning and late afternoon provide the best lighting for photographs and cooler temperatures for walking. Spring and autumn are ideal seasons, as summer midday heat can make the valleys hotter and more crowded.
