Day Trips
Keslik Monastery, located near Mustafapaşa in Cappadocia, is one of the region’s lesser-known yet most fascinating monastic sites. Dating back to the Byzantine era, it was once a vibrant religious community where monks lived, prayed, and studied. The monastery features rock-cut chapels, refectories, and living quarters carved directly into soft volcanic tuff. Inside, faded yet impressive frescoes depict biblical scenes, offering a glimpse into early Christian art. Unlike the busier Göreme Open-Air Museum, Keslik Monastery offers a peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere ideal for quiet exploration and reflection.

Keslik Monastery (Keslik Manastırı) is located about 9 km from Mustafapaşa village and roughly 25 km from Ürgüp, within the scenic Soğanlı Valley region of Cappadocia. This area is celebrated for its rock-hewn churches and tranquil natural beauty. The monastery complex features the Archangel Michael Church, ancient refectories, storage rooms, and a small network of tunnels carved into the soft volcanic rock. Visitors can explore the site either as part of a guided Cappadocia tour or independently by paying a modest entrance fee. As there are no major facilities on-site, it’s advisable to bring water, wear comfortable walking shoes, and be prepared for a peaceful yet immersive historical experience.
The interior of Keslik Monastery features narrow passages and uneven floors, so visitors should be ready for a bit of climbing and stooping while exploring. Lighting inside the cave churches is quite dim, making it useful to carry a small flashlight or use your phone’s light to better see the frescoes and architectural details. Photography is generally permitted, but flash should be avoided to protect the ancient wall paintings. The site is cared for by local guardians who are often eager to share fascinating stories about the monastery’s history and the daily life of monks who once lived here, adding a personal and authentic touch to your visit.
Keslik Monastery is easily accessible from Göreme or Ürgüp, with a drive of approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Travelers should follow the road toward Mustafapaşa and continue in the direction of Soğanlı Valley, where clear signs point the way to the monastery. There is no public transportation directly serving the site, so the most practical options are to rent a car, join an organized day tour, or hire a private driver for a more flexible visit. Many popular Cappadocia “Green” or “South” tour itineraries include Keslik Monastery among their stops, making it convenient to visit as part of a full-day regional excursion.
Keslik Monastery is open throughout the year, but the most pleasant times to visit are in spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October), when the weather is mild and the surrounding valleys are lush and colorful. Early morning or late afternoon visits are particularly ideal for photography, as the soft sunlight beautifully highlights the textures of the rock formations. During the summer months, it’s important to bring plenty of water and sun protection, since there is limited shade around the site, making outdoor exploration warmer and more challenging.
