The Red Church

The Red Church, or Kızıl Kilise, is located in the Güzelyurt district of Aksaray Province, within the greater Cappadocia region. Built in the 6th century during Byzantine rule, it is one of the region’s earliest masonry churches, standing out from the many rock-cut churches around. Its architectural style follows a cross-in-square plan, with a central dome perched on an octagonal drum featuring eight windows that allow natural light to fill the interior. Constructed from local red volcanic stone, the church’s striking color gives it its name. Although partially ruined, the Red Church has undergone some restoration to stabilize its walls and dome, preserving its historical and cultural significance for visitors.

The Red Church is quiet and remote, offering a more contemplative experience than other Cappadocia sites. Facilities are minimal, so bring water, wear sturdy shoes, and prepare for uneven terrain. Early morning or late afternoon provides the best lighting for photography, especially at sunset when the red stone glows warmly. Modest clothing is recommended as a sign of respect, and check weather conditions, as summer can be hot and winter roads may be snowy or icy.

From Cappadocia’s main towns like Göreme or Ürgüp, drive toward Aksaray and then Güzelyurt; the final stretch to the church involves rural roads and a short walk. Public transport is possible via bus or minibus to Güzelyurt, with a taxi or local shuttle for the last segment. Guided tours from Cappadocia often include the Red Church, which can be convenient if you prefer not to drive. Parking is available near the site, though the path to the church is unpaved.
