Saigon Opera House

The Saigon Opera House, located at 7 Lam Son Square in Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, is a prime example of French colonial architecture in Vietnam. Constructed between 1898 and 1900, the building has undergone several major restorations, notably in 1955, the late 1990s, and between 2007 and 2009, to preserve its historic charm while updating its facilities. With a seating capacity of approximately 1,800 across multiple levels, the venue hosts a wide range of performances, including opera, ballet, symphonic concerts, traditional Vietnamese shows, and contemporary cultural events, making it a vibrant cultural landmark in the heart of the city.

Before visiting the Saigon Opera House, it’s important to know that the venue is not generally open for public tours; access is typically limited to ticket holders during scheduled performances. Ticket prices vary based on the type of event, seating section, and popularity, with shows like the renowned A O Show ranging from approximately VND 700,000 to VND 1,600,000 or more. Advance booking is highly recommended, especially on weekends or for well-attended productions, as performances often sell out. Guests are advised to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early to allow sufficient time for ticket collection, security checks, and seating. While photography of the building’s exterior is welcomed, taking photos inside the auditorium during performances is generally not permitted. As for attire, smart casual to formal dress is preferred, particularly for evening events.

Getting to the Saigon Opera House is simple thanks to its prime location in District 1, the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. The recently opened Opera House Station on Metro Line 1, situated directly in front of Lam Son Square, offers the most convenient access. Alternatively, ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Be are widely available—just enter “Opera House” or “Nhà hát Thành phố” as your destination. Several local bus routes also serve nearby streets like Le Loi, Dong Khoi, and Lam Son. If you're staying in District 1, you can easily reach the Opera House on foot, with popular landmarks such as Ben Thanh Market and the Notre Dame Cathedral just a short walk away.
