City Gaol

Cork City Gaol is a heritage centre housed in a striking castle‑style former prison on Convent Avenue, Sunday’s Well, just outside Cork city centre.  Inside, life‑size wax figures, furnished cells, sound effects and exhibitions recreate what life was like for prisoners and warders from the 19th to early 20th century.  You can wander through wings, peek into cells, read graffiti left by inmates, and explore stories of protestors, common criminals, and political prisoners. The site also includes a Radio Museum Experience, featuring an original 6CK studio, artifacts and stories of early broadcasting in Cork. The result is a vivid, immersive journey into Ireland’s penal history—and Cork’s local stories.

Was Sie erwartet

Cork City Gaol is located at Convent Avenue, Sunday’s Well, Cork City, T23 VX25. For enquiries, you can call +353 21 4305022 or email [email protected]. Opening hours vary seasonally: from March to October, it is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00; from November to February, it operates from 10:00 to 16:00. The attraction is closed annually from December 22nd to 26th inclusive. As of 2025, admission is approximately €10 for adults, €8.50 for students and seniors, and €6 for children. Family tickets (2 adults + up to 4 children) are available at discounted rates. Optional multilingual audio guides can be rented for around €2. On-site amenities include limited on-street parking (2-hour max), coach parking opposite the entrance, accessible toilets with baby-changing facilities, a souvenir shop, and a picnic area in the Governor’s Garden. Wheelchair access is available on the ground floor via ramp; however, there is no lift to upper levels. For groups of 10 or more, guided tours of approximately 45 minutes are available by prior booking. Self-guided visits are supported with booklets or audio guides in multiple languages, allowing visitors to explore the prison’s rich history at their own pace.

Warum diese Tour buchen

Visitors should note that Cork City Gaol does not have a lift, so upper floors may be inaccessible for those with mobility issues. However, most of the key exhibits—such as seven of the nine prisoner stories, the audio-visual presentation, and the gift shop—are located on the ground floor. If you are visiting as part of a group (10 or more), it’s strongly recommended to book in advance to secure a guided tour. Audio guides are available for approximately €2 and offer valuable context to enhance your experience. Due to limited parking, especially on weekends and public holidays, arriving early is advised. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, as the visit involves walking both indoors and outdoors, sometimes on uneven surfaces. Plan to spend around 1 to 1.5 hours to fully enjoy the exhibits at a relaxed pace. The Gaol closed as a prison in 1923, later served as a radio broadcasting centre, and was eventually restored and reopened to the public in 1993. Throughout the year, special events such as Halloween tours and storytelling sessions may be scheduled, so it’s worth checking the venue’s calendar before your visit.

If you choose to walk, the journey takes around 25 to 30 minutes and includes some uphill sections. Several public bus routes, including the 208 (serving Western Road), stop within a 10-minute walk from the Gaol. During peak tourist seasons, the hop-on hop-off city tour bus also stops directly outside the attraction. For those driving, follow Sunday’s Well Road from the city centre. After passing Sacred Heart Church and the AIB bank, turn left into Convent Avenue just after the Indian Aagrah Restaurant. Limited on-street parking is available in front of the Gaol (maximum stay: 2 hours), and coach parking is located directly across the road. If you're arriving from Cork Airport (ORK), the drive takes approximately 20 minutes, covering 9 to 10 km via the N27 and local city roads.
