Mosaic Map

The Mosaic Map, commonly known as the Madaba Map, is one of the world’s oldest surviving cartographic depictions of the Holy Land. Dating back to the 6th century AD, this remarkable mosaic is located on the floor of St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in the town of Madaba, about 30 kilometers southwest of Amman. The map originally consisted of over two million colored pieces of stone, covering large parts of the Middle East, including Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, and the Nile Delta. It is valued not only for its artistic beauty but also for its historical and geographical accuracy, making it a significant piece of Byzantine art.

Alles über Mosaic Map

Was Sie erwartet

The Mosaic Map is housed within St. George’s Church, which was built in 1896 atop the remains of an ancient Byzantine church. The entrance fee to the church is around 1 JD, and guided tours are available for those interested in a detailed explanation of the map’s history and significance. In addition to the map, visitors can also admire other stunning mosaics found throughout Madaba, known as the "City of Mosaics."

Warum diese Tour buchen

Since the Mosaic Map is located on the floor of a functioning church, visitors should dress modestly and behave respectfully. Photography is allowed, but avoid using flash to protect the delicate mosaic tiles. The church can get crowded during peak tourist hours, so visiting early in the morning is recommended. If you’re a history enthusiast, hiring a guide can provide deeper insights into the mosaic’s symbolism and the history of Madaba.

Die richtige Tour auswählen

Madaba is an easy 45-minute drive from Amman. You can reach it by rental car, taxi, or by joining one of the many organized tours from the capital. Public buses to Madaba are available from Amman’s South Bus Station, but they may take longer and can be less convenient. Ride-hailing apps like Careem and Uber are also an option for a comfortable trip.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

The church is open daily, generally from 8 AM to 5 PM, with shorter hours on Sundays and holidays. The best time to visit is during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November), when the weather is pleasant for walking around Madaba. Arriving early ensures a quieter experience and better photo opportunities before the tour groups arrive.
