From Amman, the easiest way to reach Petra is by car, with the drive taking about 3 hours via the Desert Highway (Route 15). Taxis and private transfers are available but can be costly. A more affordable option is taking the JETT bus, which departs daily from Amman at 6:30 AM, arriving in Petra around 10:30 AM. Booking bus tickets in advance is recommended, especially during peak tourist seasons. Some tour operators offer guided day trips from Amman, which include transportation and a tour of the site.
The best time to visit Petra is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is pleasant for walking and exploring. Summer can be extremely hot, with temperatures reaching over 35°C, making it less comfortable for long hikes. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for avoiding crowds and capturing the best photos in the soft light.
