Velyanova House Museum

The museum is located at 5 Velyan Ognev Street, just a short stroll from the central square in the Old Town. For 2026, the standard opening hours are from 9:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:30. Please note that the museum is traditionally closed on Sundays and Mondays. The entrance fee is very affordable, typically 3 to 5 Bulgarian Lev for adults and 1 Lev for students and retirees. Entry is often free on the first Wednesday of every month. The ticket includes access to the residential floor and the cellar area. Guided lectures are available in English and Bulgarian, providing fascinating stories behind the various paintings and the house's clever defensive features.

The most iconic feature of the house is the Blue Room, which features rare landscapes of major European cities like Venice and Istanbul, painted to satisfy the curiosity of locals who could not travel. Look closely at the "Swan Room," where a fresco of two swans is said to represent the master's lifelong love for his wife. As a fortified home, it contains low doorways and steep stairs, so watch your head and wear sensible shoes. While the exterior looks like a rugged stone fort, the interior is fragile; photography is usually allowed in the courtyard, but flash is prohibited inside to protect the 200-year-old murals. The house is tucked away in a quiet side street, so keep an eye out for the small brown museum signs.

Velyanova House is centrally located in the historic district of Bansko. If you are starting from the main town square or the Holy Trinity Church, it is a simple two-minute walk down a picturesque cobblestone lane. For visitors staying near the gondola lift at the top of town, it is an easy 15-minute downhill walk through the pedestrian zone of Pirin Street. Many hotels provide shuttle services that drop off at the central square, making the house very easy to reach without a car. Taxis can drop you within 50 meters of the entrance, as the street itself is quite narrow. If you are driving, it is best to park in the large public lot near the church and walk the final distance.
