Small Basilica

The Small Basilica of Philippopolis is an archaeological jewel located on the eastern edge of Plovdiv’s ancient fortified center. Discovered accidentally in 1988 during the construction of an apartment block, this 5th-century early Christian church has been meticulously restored and enclosed in a modern, climate-controlled pavilion. The site is world-renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved floor mosaics, which feature vibrant geometric patterns and symbolic Christian imagery. Most famous is the baptistery area, where a cross-shaped marble pool is surrounded by stunning depictions of stags and doves, representing the soul’s desire for faith and the Holy Spirit. Though smaller than its neighbor, the Great Basilica, it offers a more intimate and tranquil atmosphere where you can appreciate the intricate craftsmanship of ancient masters up close.

Warum diese Tour buchen

Before you set out, it is important to know that the Small Basilica is an indoor, climate-controlled site, making it a perfect retreat if you need a break from the afternoon sun. The pavilion features raised glass walkways that allow you to walk directly over the ancient mosaics without damaging them. Photography is permitted, but flash is typically discouraged to protect the pigments of the stones. The site is fully accessible for visitors with limited mobility and those with strollers. There are clean restroom facilities on-site and informative English-language videos that provide a great overview of the restoration process. It is a quiet site, so you likely won't need to book in advance unless you are traveling with a group of more than ten people.

The Small Basilica is located at 31A Knyaginya Maria Luisa Boulevard, which is just a short walk from the modern city center. If you are staying near the main pedestrian street or Tsar Simeon Garden, you can reach the site in about 15 minutes by walking east along the boulevard. For those who prefer public transport, bus lines 1, 16, and 27 stop frequently at the "Knyaginya Maria Luisa" station, located just a few hundred meters from the museum entrance. If you are coming from the Old Town, it is a pleasant 10-minute downhill walk. Taxis are also a very reliable and affordable way to travel within Plovdiv, with most rides from the central district costing between 5 and 7 BGN.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

To avoid any potential crowds and enjoy the peaceful ambiance, the best time to visit is on a weekday morning right after opening at 9:30 AM. This is when the light inside the pavilion is softest, making it ideal for capturing the detail of the mosaics. Because the site is indoors, it is a fantastic "rainy day" activity or a place to visit during the hottest hours of a Bulgarian summer day (between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM) when the air conditioning provides a welcome relief. If you are a history buff, visiting during the spring or autumn months is highly recommended, as the walk to the basilica is much more comfortable in the milder temperatures compared to the peak heat of July and August.
