Alyosha Monument

The Alyosha Monument is one of Plovdiv’s most recognizable and debated landmarks, standing tall atop Bunardzhik Hill, also known as the Hill of the Liberators. This 11-meter reinforced concrete statue depicts a Soviet soldier holding a submachine gun pointed toward the ground, symbolizing the end of World War II. Erected in 1957, the monument is a massive example of socialist-era art that can be seen from almost any point in the city. Beyond its complex political history, the site is beloved by locals and travelers for providing the single best panoramic view of Plovdiv. From the wide granite pedestal, you can see the entire expanse of the city, the winding Maritsa River, and the distant peaks of the Rhodope Mountains.

Alles über Alyosha Monument

Was Sie erwartet

As of 2026, there is no entrance fee to visit the Alyosha Monument or the surrounding Bunardzhik Park, as it is a public space open 24 hours a day. The monument itself is an outdoor site, so there are no official "opening hours" to worry about. However, the park is a protected nature reserve, and while you can explore freely, activities like cycling, lighting fires, or littering are strictly prohibited. There are no facilities like shops or restrooms at the very top, so it is a good idea to bring your own water. Most people spend about 45 to 60 minutes here, including the walk up and time to enjoy the views from the observation deck.

Warum diese Tour buchen

Visiting Alyosha requires a bit of physical effort, as the monument sits at the highest point of the hill. The climb involves navigating a series of winding stone paths and approximately 100 steps near the final approach. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as the pavement can be uneven in places. If you are visiting during the summer, be prepared for high temperatures and limited shade once you reach the top; sun protection is a must. While the monument is a popular spot for photography, it is also a place of historical reflection, so visitors are encouraged to be respectful. Note that the monument is currently not illuminated at night, so carry a torch if you plan to stay past twilight.

Die richtige Tour auswählen

The monument is located west of the main pedestrian center and is easily reached by foot or public transport. From the city center, it is a 20 to 30-minute walk heading toward Ruski Boulevard. If you prefer the bus, lines 1, 6, 9, 26, and 99 all have stops near the base of Bunardzhik Hill; look for the "Bunardzhika" or "Ruski" stops. Taxis are also plentiful and very affordable, typically costing between 5 and 8 BGN for a ride from the Old Town. Cars are not allowed to drive all the way to the statue, so no matter how you arrive at the base, the final 15-minute ascent must be done on foot via the park’s paved trails.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

The absolute best time to visit the Alyosha Monument is during the "golden hour" just before sunset. As the sun dips behind the hills, the entire city of Plovdiv is bathed in a warm, orange glow, making it the premier spot for landscape photography. Early morning is also a great choice if you want to avoid the heat and the small crowds of locals who gather there in the evenings. During the summer months, the hilltop catches a refreshing breeze that provides a welcome relief from the city's humidity. While the park is beautiful in the spring and autumn, winter visits offer a quiet, stark beauty, though you should be careful of icy steps.
