Portobello Beach

​As a public beach, Portobello is free to access and open twenty-four hours a day, all year round. The promenade is well-equipped with public benches and litter bins to keep the area clean. Public toilets are available at several points along the promenade, typically open from 10:00 to 18:00 during the summer season, though hours are reduced in the winter. For those looking for active recreation, there are dedicated areas for beach volleyball near the community garden. The Portobello Swim Centre, located right on the front, features a beautiful Victorian swimming pool and the only authentic Turkish baths remaining in Scotland. Most local cafes and shops along the high street and promenade open around 09:00 and stay open until late afternoon or early evening.

While the beach is sandy, the North Sea water can be exceptionally cold even in the height of summer, so consider a wetsuit if you plan on swimming for long. The promenade is flat and fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, though getting onto the sand itself may require using one of the designated ramps. Portobello is very popular with dog walkers; however, during the peak summer months, there may be specific zones or restrictions to be aware of, so check the local signage. If you plan on having a barbecue, ensure you use the designated bins for hot coals to protect the environment. On sunny weekends and bank holidays, the beach becomes extremely busy, so it is best to arrive early to secure a good spot on the sand.

Portobello is very well-connected to Edinburgh city center by public transport. The easiest way to get there is by taking a Lothian Bus; services 26, 15, 19, and 49 all run frequently from the city center and drop you off just a short walk from the promenade. The journey typically takes about twenty to thirty minutes depending on traffic. If you prefer to cycle, the Innocent Railway path offers a scenic, off-road route from the city center directly toward the coast. While there is on-street parking available in the residential streets surrounding the beach, it is notoriously difficult to find a space during the summer, so using the bus or a bike is much more convenient for visitors.
