The museum is open Thursday through Monday from 10:00 to 17:00, remaining closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For 2026, admission remains free for all visitors, though voluntary donations are warmly welcomed to help preserve the collections. You do not typically need to book a ticket in advance for the permanent galleries, making it a perfect spot for a spontaneous visit. The building features a small shop in the entrance hall where you can buy locally themed books and souvenirs. While there is no café on-site, its prime location on the Canongate means you are surrounded by dozens of traditional tea rooms and historic pubs. Be aware that the museum closes annually on December 25th and 26th, with reduced hours usually in effect on New Year's Day.

Because the Museum of Edinburgh is housed in an ancient, winding building, visitors should be prepared for uneven floors, low ceilings, and narrow staircases. While the ground floor is accessible, the upper levels can be challenging for those with significant mobility issues or heavy strollers. It is highly recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes to navigate the stone floors. The museum is famously quiet compared to the nearby National Museum, offering a peaceful atmosphere for history lovers. If you are traveling with children, ask for the activity trails at the front desk to keep them engaged. Also, keep in mind that photography for personal use is permitted, but flash is restricted in several areas to protect the delicate historical documents and textiles on display.

The museum is located at 142 Canongate, which is the lower section of the Royal Mile. From Waverley Station, it is a pleasant ten-minute downhill walk via Jeffrey Street and the Canongate. If you are using public transport, the number 35 bus stops almost directly outside the entrance. For those arriving from the New Town or Princes Street, the Edinburgh Tram can take you to St Andrew Square, followed by a fifteen-minute walk. The open-top "Edinburgh Tour" and "City Sightseeing" buses also have a dedicated stop just a minute away near the Canongate Kirk. There is no dedicated parking at the museum, and the surrounding streets are largely restricted to residents, so arriving on foot or by bus is by far the most convenient and stress-free option.
