The Qaitbay Citadel, standing proudly at the tip of Alexandria’s harbor, is one of Egypt’s most iconic medieval fortresses. Built in the 15th century on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, the citadel offers stunning sea views, thick defensive walls, and well-preserved towers. Visitors can explore stone corridors, inner courtyards, and lookout posts while enjoying the fresh Mediterranean breeze and fascinating coastal history.

The citadel is open daily and includes several levels with museum-style displays, historic chambers, and panoramic terraces. Entry requires a small ticket fee, and the site is family-friendly. The fortress is mostly outdoors, so expect some walking and stair climbing. It’s one of Alexandria’s top attractions and a must-see for history lovers and photographers.
Wear comfortable shoes, as the stone paths and stairs can be uneven. Bring sunscreen and water, especially on sunny days, since much of the tour is outside. Photography is allowed, and the rooftop areas offer great views of the harbor. Early mornings are quieter, while weekends and holidays can get busy. The wind near the sea can be strong, so a light jacket may be useful in cooler months.
Located in the Anfushi district on the western end of the Corniche, the citadel is easy to reach by taxi or Uber from anywhere in Alexandria. The trip usually takes 10–20 minutes depending on traffic. Public buses also run along the Corniche, stopping near the entrance. Parking is available but limited, especially during peak hours.
The best time to visit is during early morning or late afternoon, when temperatures are mild and lighting is perfect for photos. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather. Avoid midday in summer, as the coastal sun can be strong. Sunset visits are especially popular for capturing the citadel against golden skies.
