Basilica of St. John

The Basilica of St. John lies on Ayasuluk Hill just above Selçuk and is a dramatic, atmospheric symbol of early Christian and Byzantine heritage. Built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian over what was believed to be the tomb of John the Apostle, the ruins still feature tall brick walls, arches, and pillar bases. From its hilltop vantage point, the basilica overlooks Selçuk, the nearby fortress, and the ancient city of Ephesus making it a powerful and contemplative place to visit.

Was Sie erwartet

This once-grand basilica was designed as a cruciform church, topped by six massive domes supported by marble pillars. It included features such as a baptistery, a treasury room, and a narthex, and was a pilgrimage destination due to its association with St. John the Evangelist. Over the centuries, it was damaged by earthquakes, and later, its stones were repurposed, but much of its footprint and structural remains remain visible today.

Warum diese Tour buchen

Wear comfortable shoes walking among the ruins involves uneven stone surfaces and partial slopes. Bring water and sun protection, as some areas are exposed. Although many parts are open-air and partially restored, there are no full reconstructions of the domes, so much of what you’ll see are foundations, walls, and architectural fragments. It’s a place for quiet reflection, so visitors often spend about 30 minutes exploring.
