The Virgin Mary's House

This small shrine is considered a place of worship and pilgrimage by Christians and Muslims alike. It sits about 9 km east of Selçuk on the slopes of the mountain. The house was restored after being identified in the 19th century, inspired by visions of the Catholic nun Anna Katharina Emmerich. The structure features a cross-shaped plan, two chambers, and a fireplace. A water fountain nearby is thought by many to have healing properties.

Dress modestly out of respect, as this is a holy site. The path up includes steps and gentle slopes, so wear comfortable shoes. Bring water, especially in summer, because shaded areas are limited. Take a camera — the view over Ephesus, the olive groves, and the mountain is stunning. Quiet moments are common here, so be prepared for a reflective and peaceful visit rather than a crowded tourist stop.

From Selçuk, the House of Mary is about a 10‑minute drive. Taxis or private cars are the most convenient way to reach the summit. There is no regular public bus service to the site, so walking up is not usually recommended due to the narrow, steep road. Once you arrive, there is a small parking area and a paved path leading from the road up to the house.
