Aperlai Ancient City

Aperlai is located between Kaş and Kekova, about 15 kilometers southeast of Kaş. The ancient city dates back to the 4th century BCE and was known for its purple dye production, a valuable trade item in antiquity. Today, the site is unguarded and free to visit, with ruins spread across a quiet bay. There are no facilities like shops or cafés, so visitors should bring their own supplies. Aperlai is popular with hikers, sea kayakers, and small boat tours exploring the unspoiled Lycian coastline.

Aperlai is remote and undeveloped, so it’s best suited for adventurous travelers. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, snacks, and sturdy shoes. The ruins are partially overgrown, and the terrain can be uneven. The area is excellent for swimming and snorkeling many ancient stones and walls are visible beneath the clear sea. Since there’s no entrance fee or on-site supervision, visitors are encouraged to respect and preserve the historical remains.

From Kaş, you can reach Aperlai by hiking, boat, or kayak. The most scenic option is a sea kayak tour or private boat trip from Kaş or Üçağız, offering the chance to approach the site from the water. Adventurous hikers can follow a section of the Lycian Way, starting from the village of Sıcak or Kaş, which leads directly to Aperlai’s ruins. The journey offers breathtaking views of the coast but requires good fitness and preparation.
