Kizlaragasi Han

Kızlarağası Han is one of İzmir’s most atmospheric landmarks, located in the heart of the historic Kemeraltı Bazaar. Built in 1744 during the Ottoman era, this grand caravanserai once hosted merchants from across the world trading silk, spices, and precious goods. Today, it has been beautifully restored and transformed into a vibrant marketplace filled with souvenir shops, jewelry stalls, and cozy tea houses. Its courtyard, shaded by umbrellas and surrounded by arched stone galleries, offers a perfect place to relax with a cup of Turkish coffee while soaking up centuries of history.

Alles über Kizlaragasi Han

Was Sie erwartet

Kızlarağası Han was commissioned by Hacı Beşir Ağa, the chief eunuch of the Ottoman Palace—hence its name “Kızlarağası,” meaning “chief of the harem.” The building is a fine example of Ottoman commercial architecture, featuring two floors built around a central courtyard. The upper level once served as accommodation for traders, while the lower level was used for trade. Today, the han houses artisans selling traditional goods, handmade crafts, and antiques. Entry is free, and the site is open daily during normal bazaar hours.

Warum diese Tour buchen

The han is part of the sprawling Kemeraltı Bazaar, so expect a lively and colorful atmosphere. Wear comfortable shoes for walking and bring cash, as some smaller shops may not accept cards. Haggling is common but always done politely. The central courtyard offers several cafés an ideal spot to rest and people-watch. Mornings are calmer, while afternoons get busy with locals and tourists. The area is safe but crowded, so keep an eye on personal belongings.

Die richtige Tour auswählen

Kızlarağası Han is centrally located in İzmir’s Konak district, within the Kemeraltı Bazaar. From Konak Square, it’s only a five-minute walk through the market streets. The easiest way to reach it is by metro, tram, or bus to Konak Station. You can also take a ferry to Konak Pier and walk from there. Taxis and rideshares are available, but exploring on foot gives you the full local experience. Parking in the bazaar area is limited, so public transport is recommended.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

The han is open daily, typically from morning until early evening, with most shops closing around 6:00 p.m. The best time to visit is mid-morning, when shops are open but crowds are still light. In summer, go early to avoid the heat inside the bazaar. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring. Evenings are charming too, as the courtyard cafés provide a relaxed, authentic Turkish tea experience after a day of sightseeing.
