Alles über Shela Beach

Was Sie erwartet

Shela Beach lies just south of Lamu Old Town, on the island’s eastern coast. It’s part of Shela Village, a laid-back community known for boutique hotels, beachside cafés, and stylish Swahili villas. The beach is popular with both locals and international visitors who come for relaxation, yoga retreats, and stunning sea views. The area remains largely undeveloped, preserving its natural beauty and peaceful vibe—ideal for sunbathing, swimming, or simply reading under a palm tree.

Warum diese Tour buchen

There are no cars or motorbikes in Shela, so everything is reached by walking or boat. Bring sunscreen, water, and a hat, as there’s little shade on the beach. The currents can be strong near the channel, so swim closer to the village area. Respect the local culture by wearing modest cover-ups when leaving the beach. ATMs and card facilities are limited, so carry some cash for cafés or souvenirs. The calm mornings are best for swimming and beach walks.

Die richtige Tour auswählen

If you’re staying in Lamu Old Town, Shela Beach is easily accessible by boat or foot. A dhow or small motorboat from the Old Town jetty takes about 5–10 minutes and offers lovely views of the coastline. For those who enjoy walking, it’s a scenic 25-minute stroll along the seafront. Visitors arriving from Manda Island (Lamu Airport) can take a short boat transfer directly to Shela’s small jetty.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

Shela Beach is beautiful year-round, but the best weather falls between December and March when the skies are clear and the sea is calm. Morning hours are perfect for swimming and walks, while evenings bring breathtaking sunsets. The beach tends to be livelier during the Lamu Yoga Festival (March) and Lamu Cultural Festival (November), both hosted nearby. Avoid April and May if you prefer dry weather, as brief rains may occur.
