Lake Mapourika

When visiting Lake Mapourika, there are a few things to keep in mind. If you’re planning to kayak, bring appropriate gear, as the weather in the area can change quickly, and the water can be cold. There are several companies that offer guided kayaking tours, which is a great option for first-time paddlers. For bird watchers, the lake is home to various species, including the native Great Crested Grebe and the New Zealand Dabchick, so don’t forget your binoculars. If you prefer a walk, the Lake Mapourika Track is easy to follow, but be sure to wear sturdy footwear, as some sections may be muddy. Also, note that there are no facilities such as shops or cafes around the lake, so bring your own food and water for the day.

Lake Mapourika is located approximately 10 kilometers north of Franz Josef Township, just off State Highway 6. The lake is easily accessible by car, with a well-maintained road leading to the shore. There is parking available at the start of the Lake Mapourika Track, as well as at several points around the lake where you can access the water. If you don’t have your own vehicle, guided tours and shuttle services from Franz Josef are available to take you to the lake. Once you arrive, you’ll find several walking tracks around the lake, with stunning views of the surrounding forests and mountains.
