Tatare Tunnels Walk

The Tatare Tunnels Walk is a relatively easy 3.5 km (2.2 miles) round trip, making it suitable for most fitness levels. The walk takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete and is a great option for families or casual hikers. Along the track, you’ll encounter two tunnels: the first one is about 70 meters long, and the second tunnel stretches around 100 meters. While the tunnels are quite dark, visitors can bring headlamps or use their phone flashlights for safe exploration. The path is well-marked, with some sections of the track being slightly muddy. However, it’s an enjoyable and relatively short hike through dense rainforest, offering plenty of opportunities for photos.

It’s important to note that there are no toilet facilities along the track, so make sure to use the facilities in Franz Josef before starting your walk. The track is also not suitable for strollers, so plan accordingly if you're bringing young children. Lastly, the weather can change quickly, so it's wise to check conditions before heading out.

The Tatare Tunnels Walk begins at the Tatare River Bridge, which is easily accessible by car from Franz Josef Township. The walk starts just off State Highway 6, about 5 minutes north of the Franz Josef Glacier car park. There is parking available at the start of the track, and the trailhead is clearly marked. If you’re traveling by bus or on a guided tour, you can also be dropped off near the trailhead. The walk is suitable for most visitors, and its proximity to Franz Josef makes it a convenient option for a half-day adventure.
