Old Muscat

Old Muscat houses some of Oman’s most significant landmarks, including the Al Alam Palace, the ceremonial residence of the Sultan, and the 16th-century Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, which guard the harbor. The National Museum of Oman is also located here, showcasing the nation’s history and cultural legacy. Walking through Old Muscat’s streets, visitors can admire traditional Omani architecture, whitewashed buildings, and beautiful seaside views.

Old Muscat is pedestrian-friendly, so wear comfortable shoes for exploring. While the Al Alam Palace and forts can only be admired from the outside, the National Museum is open to visitors and provides an excellent insight into Omani culture. Modest clothing is advised, especially when visiting religious or royal sites. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times to visit to avoid the midday heat. Don’t forget to bring a camera to capture the stunning architecture and scenic harbor views.

Old Muscat is located about 35 minutes from Muscat International Airport. Taxis, private cars, or guided tours are the most convenient ways to reach the area. Public buses also connect Old Muscat to other parts of the city. Once there, you can explore the main attractions on foot. Ample parking is available near the National Museum and Al Alam Palace.
