The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is located in the heart of Muscat and covers a vast area of over 416,000 square meters. It can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers, making it one of the largest mosques in the Gulf. The mosque's architectural elements include intricate carvings, expansive courtyards, and beautifully designed prayer halls. The main dome is 50 meters high, and the mosque’s minaret rises to 90 meters. It is an active place of worship, but it also opens its doors to visitors, offering insight into Islamic traditions and Omani culture.
Before visiting the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, remember that it is a place of worship, so dress modestly and respectfully. Women should wear long skirts or trousers and cover their arms, while men should avoid wearing shorts. Visitors are allowed inside the mosque only during specific hours (non-prayer times), and it is closed on Fridays. Photography is allowed in certain areas but avoid taking pictures of people or during prayer times. Free guided tours are available, and they provide valuable insights into the mosque’s history and architecture.
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is located in the Bawshar district of Muscat, about 15 minutes by car from the city center. It is easily accessible by taxi, private car, or ride-hailing services like Uber. If you're staying in the central part of Muscat, you can easily reach the mosque with a short drive. There is ample parking available for visitors arriving by car, and public transportation options are also available. However, taxis and ride-hailing services are the most convenient for tourists unfamiliar with the area.
The best time to visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Muscat can get extremely hot, especially during summer, so visiting during the cooler hours is advisable. The mosque is open to visitors from Saturday to Thursday between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM. It is closed to tourists on Fridays due to weekly prayers. For a quieter experience, try to visit during the weekdays when the mosque is less crowded, as weekends can attract more visitors.
