The palace is flanked by two historical forts, Al Jalali and Al Mirani, which date back to the Portuguese era. These forts, perched on rocky cliffs, add to the palace’s grandeur. While the interiors of the palace are not open to the public, visitors can enjoy the beautifully maintained courtyard and take photos with the ornate palace as a backdrop. There are also several nearby walking paths offering excellent views of the area.
The area around Al Alam Palace is pedestrian-friendly, but it’s best to wear comfortable shoes as you may want to explore nearby landmarks. Photography is allowed in the palace’s exterior courtyard but not beyond the gates. Keep in mind that modest attire is recommended out of respect for local customs. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal times to visit to avoid the midday heat.
Al Alam Palace is located in the Old Muscat area, about 35 minutes from Muscat International Airport. The palace is accessible by taxi, private car, or guided tours, many of which include it in their Muscat city itineraries. Public transport options are limited, but there is plenty of parking nearby if you’re driving.
The best time to visit Al Alam Palace is during the cooler months from October to April, especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sunlight enhances the palace's vibrant colors. Arriving at these times also ensures fewer crowds, giving you more opportunities for unobstructed photos.
