The SS. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral (Katedrální Chrám Sv. Cyrila a Metoděje) is a Baroque church in Prague with a powerful historical significance. Built in the 1730s, it is a spiritual center for the Orthodox Church in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. However, the cathedral is perhaps best known as the site of the heroic last stand of Czechoslovak resistance fighters during World War II. These men were involved in the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, one of the highest-ranking Nazi officials. Today, the cathedral also serves as a poignant memorial to these heroes, housing the National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrich Terror.

The cathedral’s exterior features stunning Baroque architecture, while its interior is richly decorated with Orthodox icons and religious motifs. Below the church, the crypt contains the moving memorial dedicated to the resistance fighters, complete with artifacts, photographs, and detailed accounts of their sacrifice. Admission to the crypt is modestly priced, and guided tours provide deeper insights into its history.
The memorial in the crypt is emotionally intense, recounting the tragic yet heroic story of the resistance fighters. Visitors are encouraged to remain respectful and quiet in this sacred space. Photography is allowed in some areas but may be restricted in the crypt. The site is wheelchair accessible in most parts, but it’s advisable to check accessibility details in advance.
