Situated on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall, the Prague Astronomical Clock is one of the city’s most iconic attractions. While viewing the clock from outside is free, visitors can also explore the interior of the Old Town Hall, which includes a close look at the clock’s mechanism and access to a stunning observation tower. Entry fees for the hall and tower are around 250-300 CZK.
Watching the hourly performance is a must-do experience, but the show lasts only about a minute, so it’s best to arrive early for a good spot. The area can get crowded, especially during peak hours. For those interested in its mechanics and history, the Old Town Hall Tower features detailed exhibits and an unbeatable view of Prague’s Old Town.
The clock is located in Old Town Square, easily reachable by public transport. The nearest metro station is Staroměstská on Line A, just a five-minute walk away. Alternatively, tram lines stopping at Staroměstská will bring you close by. If exploring on foot, it’s within a 15-minute walk from Charles Bridge or Wenceslas Square.
For a peaceful experience, visit early in the morning or late in the evening when the square is less crowded. The clock’s hourly chime draws large crowds, so arrive at least 15 minutes in advance for the best viewing. Evening visits are especially magical, as the clock and surrounding buildings are beautifully lit.
