Guatape

Guatapé is a small, lively town in the Antioquia region, best known for its vibrant murals, scenic lake views, and Peñol Rock. The Peñol Rock stands at 2,135 meters above sea level and features 740 steps to the top, rewarding climbers with panoramic views. The town is also home to plaza-like squares, where visitors can enjoy local food, shop for handmade crafts, and admire the colorful artwork on building facades. Many visitors come to Guatapé for outdoor activities like boating, hiking, and photography.

When visiting Guatapé, it’s important to bring comfortable shoes for walking around the town and climbing Peñol Rock. The hike to the top of the rock can be challenging, so bring water and wear sunscreen. Guatapé is a popular day-trip destination, so expect crowds, especially on weekends. The town has a relaxed atmosphere, but it can get busy during peak tourist seasons (December to March). Be mindful of the weather, as the region experiences frequent rain showers, so pack an umbrella or light rain jacket just in case.

To get to Guatapé from Pueblo de Zócalos, the easiest way is by private car or tour bus, which takes around 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a local bus from Pueblo de Zócalos to Medellín and then transfer to another bus heading to Guatapé. Many visitors prefer organized day tours from Medellín, which often include transportation and a guide, making the trip more convenient. Guatapé is easily accessible by road, and local transport options are frequent.
