Amphawa Floating Market is one of Thailand's most charming weekend markets, located along a picturesque canal in Samut Songkhram Province, about 90 kilometers southwest of Bangkok. Unlike other floating markets, Amphawa has retained its authentic and laid-back vibe, attracting both locals and tourists. The market is best known for its delicious seafood, grilled fresh on boats along the canal. Visitors can shop for local crafts, souvenirs, and snacks, enjoy a boat tour of the area, or simply relax and soak in the lively atmosphere. The evening ambiance, with lantern-lit boats and shimmering water, is particularly captivating.

The market operates from Friday to Sunday, typically from noon to late evening, making it a perfect weekend excursion. Entry to the market is free, but you’ll want to bring cash for shopping and dining, as most vendors don’t accept cards. Amphawa is more compact than some other floating markets, making it easy to explore on foot. There are plenty of food options, so arrive hungry and ready to sample a variety of local dishes.
Be prepared for crowds, especially in the late afternoon and evening when the market is busiest. Wear comfortable footwear, as you’ll be walking along uneven pathways and crossing small bridges. Bring a hat and sunscreen if you’re visiting during the day. Boat tours are available and offer a unique way to explore the surrounding area, including visits to nearby temples and firefly watching in the evening.
From Bangkok, Amphawa can be reached by car, taxi, or minivan. Minivans leave from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) and take about 1.5 to 2 hours. Alternatively, you can book a guided tour that includes transportation. For a more local experience, you can take a train from Bangkok’s Wongwian Yai Station to Samut Songkhram and then a short songthaew ride to the market.
Amphawa Floating Market is best visited in the late afternoon when the market is in full swing, and the canals light up with activity. Evening visits are particularly magical, as you can enjoy firefly boat tours along the river. Weekends, especially Saturday, are the busiest days, so plan for crowds if visiting then. To avoid the heat, consider arriving after 3:00 PM and staying through the evening.
