Wat Traimit, or the Temple of the Golden Buddha, is a must-visit attraction in Bangkok, renowned for housing the world’s largest solid gold Buddha statue. Standing at nearly 5 meters tall and weighing over 5 tons, the statue is an incredible example of Thai craftsmanship and devotion. This gleaming masterpiece, believed to date back to the Sukhothai period, was hidden under a plaster coating for centuries to protect it from invaders. Its true nature was only discovered in the 1950s, making it a fascinating historical and spiritual treasure.

Wat Traimit is located in Bangkok’s Chinatown area and is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The entrance fee is 40 THB for the Golden Buddha exhibit, while the museum showcasing the history of the statue and Chinatown costs an additional 100 THB. The temple grounds are well-maintained and include air-conditioned areas, making it a comfortable visit even during Bangkok’s hot days.
Modest clothing is required to enter Wat Traimit. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and scarves or sarongs are available for rent or purchase at the entrance if needed. Photography is allowed, but be mindful of other visitors and worshippers. Allocate at least an hour to explore the temple and museum. Morning visits are ideal to avoid crowds, and guided tours provide added insight into the temple’s rich history.
Wat Traimit is conveniently located in Chinatown and can be easily reached via the MRT Blue Line. Get off at Hua Lamphong Station and take a short walk or tuk-tuk ride to the temple. Alternatively, taxis, tuk-tuks, or ride-hailing apps like Grab can provide direct transport from anywhere in Bangkok.
The best time to visit Wat Traimit is in the morning, between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, when the temple is less crowded, and the weather is cooler. Weekdays are quieter compared to weekends, and visiting during Bangkok’s cool season (November to February) ensures a more comfortable experience.
