Busan Modern History Museum

Geumjeongsanseong Fortress is located in the Geumjeong district of Busan and covers a large mountain area of about 8.2 square kilometers. The fortress walls are approximately 17,300 meters long and originally protected military facilities and administrative buildings inside the mountain stronghold. Much of the complex was damaged during the Japanese colonial period, but restoration projects began in the 1970s and several gates and walls have been rebuilt. Today the fortress is a designated historic site of South Korea and an important cultural heritage location. Entrance is free, and visitors can explore the walls, hiking trails, and viewpoints at their own pace while learning about Korea’s defensive architecture and history. 

Before visiting Geumjeongsanseong Fortress, it’s important to remember that the site is spread across a mountainous area. Comfortable walking or hiking shoes are highly recommended, as many sections involve uphill paths or long walks along the fortress walls. Bring water, sunscreen, and snacks, especially during warmer months, as some areas have limited facilities. Although parts of the fortress are restored, many sections remain natural hiking trails. Maps and visitor information are available near the main entrances. Since the fortress sits within a natural mountain park, weather conditions can change quickly, so checking the forecast before your visit will help you plan a safer and more enjoyable trip. 

Reaching Geumjeongsanseong Fortress from central Busan is relatively easy using public transportation. One popular route is to take Busan Metro Line 1 to Oncheonjang Station and then transfer to a local bus heading toward the fortress entrance. Bus No. 203 stops near the South Gate or East Gate, which are common starting points for exploring the site. Another option is taking the subway to Hwamyeong Station on Line 2 and transferring to a bus from there. Visitors who prefer driving can reach the area in about 20–30 minutes from downtown Busan, though parking is limited near the fortress entrances.
