Aladzha Monastery is the most famous medieval cave monastery on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, carved directly into a 40-meter high limestone cliff. Inhabited by hermit monks during the 13th and 14th centuries, this spiritual retreat consists of two levels of chambers including a church, monastic cells, and a kitchen. The name Aladzha comes from the Turkish word for colorful, likely referring to the bright frescoes that once adorned its walls. Today, the monastery sits within the peaceful Golden Sands Nature Park, surrounded by dense greenery and rare tree species. It offers a unique mix of history and nature, where visitors can explore the rock-hewn rooms via secure metal staircases while enjoying panoramic views of the forested landscape stretching toward the sea.

The monastery is located about 17 kilometers north of Varna and is open daily from May to October between 9:00 and 17:00. During the winter months from November to April, it is typically closed on Sundays and Mondays. The entrance fee for adults is 5 Bulgarian Lev, while children can enter for 3 Lev. Your ticket includes access to the rock monastery and the on-site museum, which displays artifacts found at the site and beautiful scale models of the complex. There is a small souvenir shop and a parking area near the entrance. Please note that the site is not wheelchair accessible due to the steep metal stairs required to reach the upper levels of the monastery cells and the chapel.
Since the monastery is carved into a vertical cliff, you should wear sturdy shoes with good grip for climbing the stairs and walking the forest paths. The site can get busy in the middle of the day during the summer, so arriving early is best for a quiet atmosphere. Don't forget to visit the Catacombs, which are another set of caves located about 600 meters west of the main monastery via a marked forest trail. If you visit during the peak summer season, look out for the evening audio-visual show called Legends of Aladzha Monastery, which illuminates the cliffs with lights and music. The forest setting is cooler than the beach, but mosquitoes can be present, so a little repellent is recommended.
Reaching the monastery from Varna is quite straightforward. You can take bus 29, which stops directly at the Aladzha Monastery stop, though it runs less frequently than other lines. A more common option is to take bus 409, which connects Varna to Golden Sands, and get off at the Chaika or Maistor Manol stop. From there, it is a scenic 20 to 30 minute walk through the forest up to the monastery entrance. If you prefer a direct route, a taxi from Varna city center will take about 20 minutes and is reasonably priced. For those driving, follow the main road toward Golden Sands and look for the clear signage directing you to the monastery parking lot on the left side of the road.
The best time to visit is in the late spring or early autumn when the weather is pleasant for walking and the forest is at its most beautiful. May and June offer lush greenery, while September provides a cooler, more peaceful experience after the main holiday crowds have departed. Morning visits are ideal for photography as the sunlight hits the cliff face and provides great light for the interior of the caves. If you are interested in the light show, you will need to plan your visit for a summer evening, usually after dark between June and August. Avoid visiting immediately after heavy rain, as the stone paths and stairs can become quite slippery in the damp forest environment.
