The Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo is one of the world’s most important centers for Islamic heritage. Located in the historic Bab al-Khalq district, it showcases masterpieces from across the Islamic world. Inside, over 4,500 artefacts are displayed from a collection that exceeds 100,000 pieces. Exhibits include carved wood, glass lamps, ceramics, textiles, scientific instruments, and beautifully illuminated Qur’ans. The building itself, designed in a neo-Mamluk style, adds to the cultural atmosphere.

The museum is easy to reach from central Cairo. The nearest metro station is Mohamed Naguib, about a short walk from the building. Several bus routes also pass along Port Said Street. Taxis and ride-share services like Uber are very convenient, especially if you’re staying downtown. Parking near the museum can be limited, so public transport or taxis are often the best option.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

The best time to visit is early in the morning when the museum opens, especially on weekdays, to avoid crowds. The most pleasant seasons for sightseeing in Cairo are spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild. Fridays tend to be busier due to weekend visitors, so midweek trips offer a quieter experience. Visiting during the cooler months also makes exploring the surrounding historic area more comfortable.
