Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus

The Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus, also known as Abu Serga, is one of Cairo’s most historic Christian sites. Located in Coptic Cairo, it is believed to have been built over a cave where the Holy Family—Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus—rested during their flight into Egypt. The church features a basilica-style layout, ancient columns, and richly decorated icons. Beneath the sanctuary, the cave adds a spiritual and historical significance, making the visit both moving and visually impressive.

Was Sie erwartet

Abu Serga is part of Old Cairo and dates back to the 4th–5th century, though much of the visible structure was rebuilt after fires and restorations. Inside, three naves are separated by columns—eleven of white marble and one of red granite—which create a graceful rhythm throughout the space. The crypt, considered the resting place of the Holy Family, is the highlight of the visit. Modest dress is required, and shoes must be removed in certain areas.

Warum diese Tour buchen

Visitors should wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Socks are recommended when removing shoes inside the church. The crypt may be slightly damp or cooler than the main hall. Photography is usually allowed, but it’s polite to check before taking pictures. The church can get crowded during religious holidays, and it is particularly lively on June 1st, when a special mass commemorates the Holy Family’s stay.

Abu Serga is located in Coptic Cairo, close to other major landmarks like the Hanging Church and the Coptic Museum. It is accessible by taxi or ride-share from downtown Cairo in 15–25 minutes depending on traffic. The nearest metro station, Mar Girgis, is a short walk from the church. Many guided tours of Old Cairo also include Abu Serga in their itinerary.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

The best time to visit is in the morning, when light softly illuminates the interior and crowds are smaller. Weekdays are generally quieter than weekends. Summer visits are possible, but the crypt can feel humid or damp, so morning visits are more comfortable. Visiting during religious festivals adds a cultural dimension, especially on the June 1st mass day.
