The Rock Tombs around Akyaka are striking ancient burial chambers carved high into the cliffs overlooking the Azmak River valley. Dating back to the Lycian and Carian civilisations, these tombs were created for nobles and important figures, their elevated placement symbolising closeness to the gods. Today, they sit dramatically above the landscape, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s ancient past and providing a beautiful backdrop to Akyaka’s natural scenery.

These tombs are carved directly into the limestone cliffs and vary in size and design. Some resemble small temples with column-like facades, while others are simpler chambers. The majority are visible from below rather than accessible up close, due to steep and rocky terrain. There is no official entry fee as they are part of the natural environment, and the site can be viewed freely from the paths and riverbank areas around Akyaka.
Most rock tombs cannot be entered, and many are not reachable without climbing dangerous slopes, so viewing from safe vantage points is recommended. Binoculars or a good camera help you appreciate the details. Wear comfortable walking shoes if you plan to explore nearby paths. The area is natural and unstaffed, so bring water and sun protection. Respect the site, as it is both historic and fragile.
From Akyaka town centre, the rock tombs can be viewed by walking toward the Azmak River or following the paths that lead toward the surrounding hills. Some of the best views are from riverboat tours, which pass directly below the cliffs. If arriving from farther away, local minibuses drop you in Akyaka, from where the tomb area is an easy walk. Taxis can also bring you close to viewing spots.
Early morning and late afternoon are ideal times to visit, as the sunlight casts warm tones on the cliffs and makes the tombs stand out beautifully. Midday can be hot, especially in summer, and the cliffside areas offer little shade. The site is open all day since it is part of the natural landscape, so you can enjoy the view whenever the light and weather suit you.
