The Akyaka River, also known as Azmak Nehri, is one of Akyaka’s most peaceful natural treasures. Fed by cool underground springs, the river flows with crystal-clear, turquoise water that stays cold even in the hottest months. Reeds sway gently along the banks, ducks and turtles glide across the surface, and the scenery feels almost dreamlike. Taking a slow boat ride here gives you a front-row view of the river’s calming beauty and rich underwater life.
The river stretches roughly 2 kilometers and is surprisingly deep in some places due to its spring-fed source. The water remains very cold year-round, often around 8–10°C. Akyaka River is a protected natural area, making it one of the cleanest and most serene spots in the region. Visitors come for boat tours, riverside cafés, and the refreshing breeze that flows through the valley. Access to the riverside is generally free, and the area is easy to explore on foot.
The water is extremely cold, so swimming can be a shock though some brave visitors do try a quick dip. The river is protected, so fishing and hunting are not permitted. Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk along the banks, as the ground can be uneven. Boat tours are quiet and slow, usually with small electric boats to preserve the environment. Respect the wildlife, as ducks, turtles, and sometimes otters make their home here.
If you’re staying in Akyaka, the river is only a short walk from the town center and easy to reach from most hotels. From outside Akyaka, minibuses and local buses frequently connect the town with surrounding areas. Taxis are available for direct access, and drivers know the river well. If you’re driving, parking can be found near the riverside restaurants, though spaces may fill up during summer.
Early mornings and late afternoons are the most beautiful times to visit the river. Morning light highlights the clarity of the water, while evenings bring cooler air and a soft golden glow. Summer afternoons can be hot, but the river area stays breezy and refreshing. Since it’s a natural attraction without gates or opening hours, you can visit at any time of day, depending on the atmosphere you prefer.
