Windmills

Perched on a breezy hill between Bodrum and Gümbet, the Bodrum windmills are iconic stone structures that once harnessed coastal winds to grind grain. Dating back to the 18th century, their tall, whitewashed cylindrical bodies and wooden sails now stand as silent sentinels overlooking the peninsula. Although they are no longer operational, the windmills blend historical charm with panoramic views creating a romantic, timeless atmosphere. From here, you can gaze out over Bodrum town, Gümbet Bay, and even the Aegean horizon, making it a favorite spot for relaxation, photography, and quiet reflection.

Alles über Windmills

Was Sie erwartet

There are about seven historic windmills on the hilltop, though their condition varies: a few have been partially restored, while others remain in ruins. Built from stone and brick, their design reflects the traditional milling architecture of the region. They were actively used until the 1970s before being replaced by motor-powered systems. Visiting the windmills is free, and there is no official entrance fee, making them a public and easily accessible attraction. The site is open all day, though there are no formal facilities like ticket booths or staff on site.

Warum diese Tour buchen

Wear comfortable shoes, because the terrain around the windmills is uneven and rocky. Bring sun protection, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen as shade is limited on the hilltop. There are no restrooms or extensive facilities at the windmills themselves. Since the site is essentially open and unfenced, be particularly careful if you are visiting with children. Also, bear in mind that while some windmills can be approached closely, you may not be able to enter all of them safely due to their fragile condition.

Die richtige Tour auswählen

From Bodrum town centre, you can hike up to the windmills via a path that winds through the old streets — the walk takes about 20–30 minutes depending on your starting point. If you prefer not to walk uphill, taxis are readily available and can drop you near the road that leads to the hilltop. Alternatively, local buses or minibuses (dolmuş) running between Bodrum and Gümbet also pass close by; from the drop-off point, it's a short uphill stroll to reach the windmills.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

The best times to visit are early in the morning or just before sunset. During these hours, the light is soft and golden perfect for photography and the breeze makes the climb more comfortable. Spring and autumn are especially pleasant for a visit, with milder temperatures and fewer tourists, while summer afternoons may feel very hot. Since it's a public site with no formal closing hours, you can visit at any time, but evening visits can be particularly atmospheric.
