Institute of Nautical Archaeology

The institute is situated close to Bodrum Castle and operates mainly as a research and conservation facility. It does not function as a typical tourist attraction, but its presence enriches the historical context of the castle’s underwater exhibits. The institute collaborates with global universities and works on famous shipwrecks like the Uluburun. Entry to the institute itself is generally restricted, but information panels and related exhibits at the castle are open to the public.

Visitors should note that the Institute of Nautical Archaeology is not designed for walk-in tours. Instead, the best way to experience its work is by visiting the Bodrum Castle Museum, where many of the institute’s discoveries are displayed. The museum includes reconstructed shipwrecks, ancient cargo, and diving stories from the Aegean. Bringing comfortable shoes is recommended since the castle complex requires walking through multi-level stone areas.

Reaching the institute is easy from Bodrum town center. It is located within walking distance of the marina, the castle, and the surrounding shops. If you are staying anywhere in Bodrum Peninsula, you can take a dolmuş to the city center and walk a few minutes toward the castle entrance. Taxis also drop visitors directly at the nearby gate, making access simple and quick.
