Boca do Inferno, or “Mouth of Hell,” is a dramatic cliff formation just west of Cascais. Once a sea cave, its roof collapsed over time, creating a rugged opening where Atlantic waves crash with force. The combination of jagged cliffs, swirling water and sea spray makes it one of Cascais’ most striking natural sights. On calmer days, it’s peaceful and photogenic; on rougher days, it becomes a powerful display of nature’s energy.
Boca do Inferno is free to visit and open year-round. It sits about 2 km from central Cascais, making it one of the closest natural attractions to town. You’ll find paved paths, viewing platforms, a few souvenir stalls and small cafés nearby. The ground can be uneven, so comfortable shoes are recommended, and children should be supervised near cliff edges.
The site is outdoors and exposed to the ocean, so conditions can vary. On stormy or windy days, waves hit the cliffs with impressive force, but access to the lower viewpoint may occasionally be restricted for safety. Sunset is one of the best times to visit, offering warm light over the rocks. Bring water, sun protection and avoid getting too close to the cliff edges.
From Cascais town centre, you can reach Boca do Inferno in about 15–20 minutes on foot by following the coastal promenade. Cycling is also a pleasant option. Local buses run along the coast and taxis are inexpensive for such a short distance. If you drive, parking is available near the site but can be limited during busy hours.
Visit early in the morning for a quieter experience, or late afternoon for beautiful light. Calm days make it ideal for strolling and photography, while rougher weather provides the dramatic wave action Boca do Inferno is known for. Summer brings more visitors, but the area rarely feels overcrowded due to its open space.
